{"id":1384,"date":"2016-11-04T01:07:44","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T01:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/wp\/?p=1384"},"modified":"2016-11-04T01:08:13","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T01:08:13","slug":"modeling-with-soap-bubbles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/2016\/11\/04\/modeling-with-soap-bubbles\/","title":{"rendered":"Modeling with Soap Bubbles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am so very lucky to have a guest teacher with me this year at my school. \u00a0Maria Hernandez (from the North Carolina School of Science and Math) is probably one of the most energetic and knowledgeable teachers, speakers and mathematicians you could ever find &#8211; and we got her for the whole year! \u00a0We are so excited. \u00a0I am working with her and she is so much fun to work with. \u00a0I have been teaching calculus with PBL for almost 20 years now and thought I had all the fun I could but no! \u00a0Maria is bringing modeling into my curriculum and I&#8217;m enjoying every minute of it.<\/p>\n<p>As we started teaching optimization this week, Maria had this wonderful idea that she had done before where we want to find the shortest path that connects four houses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/wp\/2016\/11\/04\/modeling-with-soap-bubbles\/picture-of-houses\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1385\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1385 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picture-of-houses-300x228.png\" alt=\"picture-of-houses\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picture-of-houses-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picture-of-houses-395x300.png 395w, https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/picture-of-houses.png 667w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I let the kids play with this for about 10 minutes and then did this wonderful demonstration with some liquid soap bubbles and glycerin. \u00a0We had two pieces of plastic and four screws that represented the houses. \u00a0As the kids watched, I dipped the plastic frame into the liquid and voila-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/wp\/2016\/11\/04\/modeling-with-soap-bubbles\/file_000\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1386\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1386 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/File_000-300x224.jpeg\" alt=\"file_000\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/File_000-300x224.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/File_000-768x574.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/File_000-1024x765.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.carmelschettino.com\/dev0418\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/File_000-402x300.jpeg 402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right away the students saw what they were looking for in the shortest path. \u00a0Now they had to come up with the function and do some calculus.
